High School In The Suburbs
I remember the day I moved to my boarding school,
After all of the letters, phone calls, zoom interviews, I was finally moving in.
Mr. Williams would be making another trip to the boarding school he sent his kids and plenty of others,
This was the norm for him at the end of August most years.
This was just part of his summer routine, to get a urban kid to the suburbs,
I cried tears of joy knowing that he had faith in me and what I can become.
I candidly remember the drive being about 45 minutes which wasnât bad,
Mr. Williams could surely come to visit me whenever he wanted or when I needed him.
Getting to the campus, it was beautiful and immaculate,
Fresh cut grass, buildings standing tall and shining in the sunlight of a breezy summer day.
There were all different races of kids and parents walking through the campus,
I only saw and went to school with predominant Black and Latino kids.
Now Iâm in an environment of Black, Latino, White, Indian, and Asian kids,
This was going to be an adjustment, damn Mr. Williams was surely right.
As we parked the car and went to the registrarâs office,
Mr. Williams would be greeted by a myriad of school workers.
Theyâd all say hello, give their pleasantries and knew why he was there,
Iâd be introduced to everyone and they comforted me in knowing that if I needed them, they would be there for me.
He knew teachers, school counselors, the registrar, custodians,
I was wondering how in the world he knew nearly everyone there but Iâll let him tell you that story down the road.
When I finished the paperwork and got my dorm room key,
Mr. Williams knew exactly where to take me and we got to the dormitory.
It was a whole other world of living and Iâm thinking Iâll have a roommate,
I found out that Iâd have my own room and my jaw dropped.
My academic scholarship got me my own living space?
Words couldnât explain how elated I was to have my own room.
Iâd be sharing the bathroom but that was fine and weâd have cleaners to clean our bathrooms while we were in class,
We would have to keep our rooms clean and weâd get inspections randomly of our living spaces.
Mr. Williams would stick around for a while and talk to staff members,
I had to go do orientation with my new classmates and potentially new friends.
After orientation, Mr. Williams said his goodbyes as I had made new friends on my floor,
We were from all different backgrounds which was interesting and so intriguing.
It would be me and three other kids Iâd become best friends with,
We became known as the fantastic four because we were always together.
It was scary starting in a new school and dealing with the unknown,
The expectations from a GPA standpoint were high and the teachers cared about everyoneâs progress.
School was from 9-2pm everyday, 6 classes a day,
Classrooms were 15 students instead of 25-30 back in Alphabet City.
Weâd have study hall everyday from 2-4pm where weâd have to
